Last week my cousin arrived in Hawaii after being abroad with her husband for the better part of a year.
I went to visit her, and in the course of our visit we both brought up how we've both been interested in trying to vlog. We both have photography/videography backgrounds, and during the pandemic one of the easiest things to do to take your mind off of being stuck at home was to turn on YouTube and watch other lifestyle vloggers.
I forced her to promise that we'd both make one vlog video each at the end of the week, just for some fun and something to do.
I spent the next week bringing my camera around with me, getting shots of everything from going to the beach, to hanging laundry. What started as a fun exercise project reminded me how much I love videography and cinematography.
It also forced me to do more than just sit in my room all day, even after finishing work, and to seek things that were more exciting than a two minute shot of my window.
I became a little more accountable for my surroundings, and how much time I would spend just locked away in the dark, and also helped me be a little more present in the moment, as I would have to look around and really see what was there, and what I could capture.
I know my editing skills are far from desirable, but it was fun, and I enjoyed it.
I'd like to improve and create more vlogs showing what I do around this little island of mine, as well as eventually maybe some other cinematic content.
For now, my first vlog, a week with me, is up for viewing.
I'd be thrilled if you came along with me.
